Azithromycin Taste Masked Micro-Pellets / Granules |
| |
Description: Azithromycin is a semi-synthetic macrolide antibiotic chemically related to erythromycin and clarithromycin (Biaxin). It is effective against a wide variety of bacteria such as Hemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, mycobacterium avium, and many others. The most often those causing middle ear infections, tonsillitis, throat infections, laryngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, Typhoid, and sinusitis. In recent years it has primarily been used to prevent bacterial infections in infants and those with weaker immune systems. It is also effective against certain urinary tract infections and venereal diseases, such as non-gonococcal urethritis, chlamydia, gonorrhea and cervicitis. Azithromycin, like all macrolide antibiotics, prevents bacteria from growing by interfering with their ability to make proteins. Due to the differences in the way proteins are made in bacteria and humans, the macrolide antibiotics do not interfere with production of proteins in humans.
Taste masking in macrolides can be achieved through blocking of certain functional groups. In case of Azithromycin the amine as well as the hydroxyl groups imparts bitter taste. We have employed a combination of a polymer & an ion exchange resin to mask the bitterness.
The oral taste masked pellets can be administered for use in suspension or in dry syrup. |
